Breaking down braces facts

 In braces, orthodontics

Straightening smiles with braces at SmilesRForever is quite common and it’s clear there are major advantages to this investment. The obvious benefits of braces include straight teeth and a great looking smile, but there are considerable health benefits as well. Relief of headaches, jaw pain, tooth grinding, gum disease, and general inflammation can be a direct result of straightening with braces. Even improved breathing and less snoring can occur with braces. You probably have questions about braces, so we’ll break down some of the facts for you here.

What causes orthodontic problems?

Orthodontic problems can be inherited, but they can also be affected by environmental and developmental factors. Inherited conditions include crooked teeth, crowded teeth, and other irregularities of the teeth and jaw. Other acquired issues can be caused by thumb sucking and premature loss of baby or permanent teeth. Even allergens in the air can cause congestion, resulting in mouth breathing which adversely affects growth of both jaws.

Treatment times

The treatment time for braces may vary between patients. It really depends upon the results that need to be achieved. Complicated problems can take upwards of two or three years of treatment time, while others can expect a straight smile in mere months. We can give you a more accurate idea of how long your treatment should take during a braces consultation. Also, there are technologic advances that can gently speed up the time you are in braces.

Will braces affect my speech?

Braces and Invisalign can affect your speech at first, creating a slight lisp that can be overcome. The issue usually resolves itself in the first weeks of treatment. When it comes to Invisalign, keep speaking with your trays in and soon you will adjust to the new device.

Age of treatment

There is no exact age range for treatment with braces. We do recommend earlier treatment, however, because braces can be used to prevent issues like jaw pain and grinding from developing in the first place. We have treated adult patients in their 50’s to 70’s with both braces and Invisalign. It’s never too late for treatment though, so if you’re an adult with alignment issues, please come see us for a consultation!

How do I know if my child needs braces?

It is strongly recommended to evaluate straightness issues as early as 7 years old, once a child’s first permanent molars come in. If you notice alignment issues or pain problems you should contact us immediately regarding treatment timing. Problems are not always obvious though and the front teeth can look straight while other alignment can still be off. Regular dental appointments can help diagnose these types of issues, so keep your child’s appointments and we’ll remain diligent towards your child’s dental health.

Braces care

It’s always important to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing and flossing after every meal. You should avoid hard and sticky foods when you have braces as they can cause damage or breakage. Keep all your orthodontic appointments and follow your dentist’s recommendations and you should have great success in your treatment.

Call for your no-obligation consultation and we’ll walk through all the concerns surrounding your unique needs. We’re committed to making your orthodontic journey a smooth one.
